FIB will ensure that the World Championship in Syktyvkar year 2021 will get a special attention, said FIB-president Boris Skrynnik when he visited Syktyvkar. Bandy World Championship is organized in 2021 in Russian Syktyvkar. The city is the largest city in the Russian sub-region of Komi and has 240,000 inhabitants.

During the past week, both FIB president Boris Skrynnik and the Finnish Champion team Veiterä have visited Syktyvkar.

In an interview with the media, Mr Skrynnik said that Syktyvkar thanks to its bandy traditions is a great place for the championship. For Boris Skrynnik, it's an old dream that the world championship will be held in Syktyvkar. He started his career as player and coach in Syktyvkar. The preparations for the World Championship have already begun. The region is famous for its bandy traditions. Building several ice halls, like in Syktyvkar, will develop bandy, not least by involving children in sport, said Mr Skrynnik.

On Saturday, March 24, the Finnish National Champions Veiterä visited Syktyvkar for a friendly match. The match was scored 8-8 against the local team playing in Russia second league. Veiterä won the match on penalties. The match attracted a large audience of about 10,000 people and that was much more important than the result.

Nikolai Berezhnoy, Minister of Sport in Komi, thanked the teams and the organizers for this fine end to the bandy season. Nikolai Valuev, the former boxing world champion, was also in place in Syktyvkar. "I look forward to seeing you again," said Nikolai. When the World Championship is held in the new bandy hall, it will be a worthwhile tournament, Nikolai Valuev said to the audience's applause.

At the opening ceremony of the match, Martti Tepponen, Veiterä, said that Finns and Komi are closely related people. The cooperation will only benefit both sides. We knew that the Syktyvkar supporters would support us, they were waiting for this, "concluded Martti Tepponen and thanked for the invitation to visit Syktyvkar.

SANDVIKENS AIK WON THE WORLD CUP 2017!

Sandviken AIK won the World Cup wich was settled in Sandviken, Sweden. Sandviken made a completely unprofitable turn in the final against Russian Yenisej. The Russian favorite team went up to a 3-1 lead and seemed to simply keep the dominance and win the match. Sandviken's coach Magnus Muhrén requested time out in the second half and after that the match turned. Sandviken played more aggressively and gave Yenisej significantly less space. The winning goal came on overtime and the extension of the sudden death was granted.

The match ended dramatically when the home team's forward Christoffer Edlund got a shot on a skate in a through-through on the left. The referees decided for a penaltyshot. Sandviken's captain Daniel Berlin felt strong and dared to go ahead to beat the penalty. He shot the ball between the legs of the Russian goalkeeper Roman Chernik and Sandviken took their first World Cup victory in fifteen years.

Sandviken's way to victory went through quarterfinal victory against Broberg with 4-3 and victory in the semi-final against Neftyanik with 3-2. Yenisej reached the final by knocking Baikal Energy with 11-1 in the quarterfinals and in the semifinal Yenisej won against Hammarby with 5-2.

Gunnar Fast - The Bandy Missionary

The Federation of International Bandy recognizes and honors Gunnar Fast, "The Bandy Missionary" for his supreme contribution to US Bandy and thus to the entire bandy world.

In December 1980 Gunnar was both a Captain in the Swedish Army and a Certified Bandy Instructor. When Gunnar arrived in Minnesota there were only four bandy nations, The Soviet Union, Sweden, Finland and Norway. Gunnar's mission was to make the US the fifth bandy nation. He was extraordinarily successful. Within one month of arriving in Minnesota Gunnar had converted over 100 hockey players into bandy players, formed a league with seven teams who then competed for the first US bandy championship. Gunnar then organized and coached the first US national team and brought them to Sweden in October 1981.

By the 1984-85 season Gunnar had expanded the US league to 24 teams competing in three divisions. He also continued to bring US teams to Sweden where they annually competed in the World Cup Ljusdal as well as against various Swedish elite teams. Gunnar then led the US National Team as they competed in the World Championships for the first time in Oslo 1985. Gunnar was the architect of US Bandy and was a positive influence on a generation of US bandy players. Not surprisingly, the US Championships, held every year since 1981, is named the Gunnar Cup in his honor. In 2014 Gunnar was among the initial inductees into the US Bandy Hall of Fame. There is no doubt that Gunnar Fast, through his contributions to US Bandy, also changed the bandy world, beginning the growth of bandy to the present number of 27 nations. Gunnar Fast is truly "The Bandy Missionary".
